JEFFERSON-PILOT SHAREHOLDER GROUP USES VIDEO TO FIGHT PROXY BATTLE

JEFFERSON-PILOT SHAREHOLDER GROUP USES VIDEO TO FIGHT PROXY BATTLE
CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Jefferson-Pilot Shareholders Committee ("JPSC"), a shareholder advocacy group engaged in a high-profile proxy fight with the Jefferson-Pilot Corp. (NYSE: JP), is using an innovative tool in its campaign to win shareholder support: a video.
The JPSC has mailed copies of the videocassette to all shareholders of Jefferson-Pilot stock who hold 100 shares or more. The video features interviews with the committee's seven candidates for JP board seats, various JPSC staff and financial advisers. Also interviewed is Ralph Whitworth, president of Washington-based United Shareholder's Association, an independent non-profit organization representing 65,000 shareholders nationwide.
"We have such a strong slate of director nominees that we felt it essential for shareholders to get a sense of them as people," said Craig Redwine, vice chairman of the JPSC and the video's moderator. "The video gives shareholders a good idea of what each candidate will have as his or her top priority as a JP director."
Another innovation being used by the JPSC is a "proxygram" that allows shareholders to call in their proxy to an 800 telephone number 24 hours a day. After providing identification, the shareholder places his or her vote, which is then transmitted electronically to the committee's proxy solicitor. By law, shareholders may register or change their votes up until the time of the annual meeting.
Copies of the video are available to holders of less than 100 shares, and to a limited number of others who may be interested, from JPSC's offices in Charlotte, N.C. Collect calls registering the video will be accepted at 704-376-3519.
