JEFFERSON-PILOT ANNOUNCES A.M. BEST RATING OF JEFFERSON-PILOT LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY

 JEFFERSON-PILOT ANNOUNCES A.M. BEST RATING
 OF JEFFERSON-PILOT LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY
GREENSBORO, N.C., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Jefferson-Pilot Corporation (NYSE: JP) announced today that the A.M. Best Company awarded its highest rating of A++ to Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company, citing the company's "superior financial strength." Jefferson-Pilot Life is one of a small percentage of life insurance companies to receive Best's new A++ rating. This category was created recently to recognize the highest level of performance as judged on
both a quantitative and qualitative basis.
In its decision to assign the A++ rating, A.M. Best said it took into account "the company's conservative operating strategy, strong earnings performance, superior capitalization, and favorable liquidity position. Exceptional individual life earnings and improved group accident and health profitability since 1988 have resulted in net operating gains totaling nearly $436 million over the last five years. These earnings, along with favorable performance from the invested asset portfolio, have contributed to strong annual cash flow, as well as consistent expansion of capital and surplus funds despite the regular payment of stockholder dividends."
 W. Roger Soles, chairman and chief executive of Jefferson-Pilot Corporation, said, "We are pleased to have received A.M. Best's new A++ rating. We believe it is the result of sound and successful management principles applied consistently with a view toward the long term."
