JCPENNEY REACHES 2,500TH EDI TRADING PARTNER

PLANO, Texas, March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- J. C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP) announced today the addition of their 2,500th EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) trading partner. EDI is a major technology component of quick response, which allows for faster and improved communication of business documents between JCPenney and its suppliers.
The 2,500th trading partner is Toppers Inc., a maker of ladies dresses and casual hats. Toppers has been a JCPenney trading partner since 1984, and processes approximately 900 purchase orders annually from JCPenney. Total annual purchase order volume for the company is around 8,000. Toppers president, Dennis Tollini, states that EDI and purchase order automation will improve their planning and manufacturing process, and customer service. The company has 40 employees and is located in Buffalo, N.Y.
JCPenney experienced a 62 percent increase in the number of trading partners who began using EDI in 1992. More importantly, 92 percent of all purchase orders generated by JCPenney in February, 1993, were sent to suppliers electronically, as opposed to paper.
JCPenney will continue this aggressive program in 1993 by expanding the use of EDI to additional suppliers and by implementing new EDI documents.
