JCC CELEBRATES TWO DECADES OF DANCE WITH RETROSPECTIVE.HOUSTON--The Jewish Community Center's Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre celebrates its twentieth anniversary this month with a retrospective of past companies, master classes by Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago and Mark Morris Dance, an evening of ballroom fun, a residency by Keshet Chaim Dance Ensemble A group of dancers preforming under a common name: the dance equivalent of a band. The pleasure, joy, and gaiety of a festival or celebration. 3. , in fact, that the 2000 Dance Month is really five weeks. Dedicated volunteer Hilda Frank founded the event in 1979. A native Houstonian, born and raised in the Bayou City Bayou City is a popular nickname for Houston, Texas, founded at the confluence of White Oak and Buffalo Bayous by the Allen Brothers in the early nineteenth century. Since that time, the ubiquitous namesake streams have played a major role in the city's developoment, both as area, Frank has "been a professional student since I was three," she says, adding that she has studied ballet, modern, flamenco, and ethnic dance. Frank had an Israeli folk-dance troupe for sixteen years and taught dance "on and off between babies." When the students wanted to perform, the idea of a recital turned into a full-blown dance spectacular, possibly drawing elements from Frank's tenure at Jacob's Pillow. One thing both women wanted early on was a chance for local choreographers to show their works.
