JCAHO issues revised tissue storage and issuance standards.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has issued revised tissue storage and issuance standards. The new standards, which will be effective in July 2005, were revised for the Laboratory Accreditation Program and adopted for the Ambulatory Care, Critical Access Hospital and Hospital Accreditation Programs, according to JCAHO Online.

The revisions include:

*Address difficulties in monitoring the temperature of tissue stored during transport.

*Maintain continuous temperature monitoring for storage refrigerators and freezers.

*Clarify who is responsible for completing and returning usage information cards to source facilities.

*Procedures include a process to sequester tissue reported by the source facility as the cause of possible infection or involved in an event that may have contaminated the product.

JCAHO noted the adoption of the standards in hospitals, critical access hospitals and office-based surgery facilities is being made to ensure current practice in the relevant settings of care.
