JC ROUNDUP: VALLEY HOLDS OFF PASADENA.

Byline: Daily News

Chanzie Washington made a key basket with 19 seconds remaining to help propel the Valley College men's basketball team past Pasadena 58-57 in a wild and sometimes confusing first-round Southern California Tournament playoff game Saturday night at Valley College.

Valley (22-11) defeated Pasadena (12-20) in a double-overtime game in November. This one was just as close.

Pasadena rallied from a six-point deficit in the final four minutes to lead 50-48 over the sixth-seeded Monarchs with 3:12 remaining.

A technical foul, however, on Clarence Johnson for taunting after a slam dunk helped fuel Valley's comeback.

Washington, who had all 15 of his points in the second half, also made two clutch free throws in the closing seconds.

Pasadena was forced to play the final 2:18 with only four players because three players had fouled out and two others were suspended for disciplinary reasons.

In other Southern California tournament games:

--Moorpark 98, Grossmont 75: Former Cleveland High of Reseda star Simmagin Smith had 23 points and Devin Montgomery added 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting as the third-seeded Raiders (23-5), ranked fifth in the state and third in Southern California, won in a rout at Moorpark College.

--Glendale 53, Cerritos 52: Dijon Dijon (dēzhôN`), city (1990 pop. 151,636), capital of Côte-d'Or dept., E France, the old capital of Burgundy. It is a transportation hub and industrial center with food, metal-products, and electronics industries. Lee's lay-up and ensuing free throw with 18.5 seconds left gave the eighth-seeded Vaqueros (21-10) their first lead of the game and the win at Glendale College.

In the women's tournament:

--Valley 64, Antelope Valley 51: Itricia Ewells scored 28 points for the 10th-seeded Monarchs in a first-round regional playoff win at Valley College.

Valley (23-12) has beaten Antelope Valley (19-15) 17 consecutive times.
