JC FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: CANYONS SURVIVES VALLEY.

Byline: Daily News

College of the Canyons' football team survived its toughest test of the season to escape with a 48-45 Western State Conference North Division victory Saturday night at Valley College.

The Cougars (7-0, 4-0), ranked No. 3 in the state by the California Community College Football Coaches Association, rallied from a 24-14 halftime deficit by piling up 403 second-half yards, including 310 from sophomore quarterback Cory Miles.

Despite throwing three interceptions - one more than he had in COC's first six games - Miles finished with a career-high 449 yards and four touchdowns.

Gerrell Cain, Jason Lance, Tyrell Smith and Devin Stearns all made touchdown receptions for COC, which received two rushing scores from Will Caldwell, including the gamewinner with 6:17 left.

- Erik Boal

--Moorpark 21, Ventura 14: Jason Napolean rushed for 72 yards on 17 carries and accounted for all of the Moorpark touchdowns as the Raiders (4-3, 3-1) defeated host Ventura in WSC North Division play.

Moorpark scored on its third possession of the game, with quarterback Larry Dockery hitting Joe Shumpert on a 62-yard pass to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Napolean.

- Tim Tanner

--Hancock 38, Pierce 20: Pierce (2-5, 1-3) turned the ball over seven times in the first half and trailed 35-0 at halftime at Hancock (4-3, 2-2) in a WSC North Division game.

Pierce quarterback Thomas Herringshaw completed 18 of 29 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown but threw four interceptions. Receiver Daniel Smith caught seven passes for 107 yards.

-Steve Goldstein

--Harbor 49, Glendale 31: Steve Martinez completed 21 of 38 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns, but it was not enough for Glendale (3-4, 2-2) in a WSC Southern Division loss at Harbor (4-3, 4-0). The teams combined for 918 yards total offense.

Glendale's Chris Berroud ran for 104 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 83 and 4 yards, and Justin Tyler added two short touchdown runs.
