JC FOOTBALL: GLENDALE RUNS AWAY WITH WESTERN STATE BOWL.

Byline: Daily News

The formula needed to produce a postseason bowl victory for Glendale College was simple. Host a game, where they were 5-0 this season, and run the ball a lot.

That is exactly what the ninth-ranked Vaqueros did Saturday in a 23-14 victory in the Western State Bowl over visiting Santa Ana College (7-4) at Sartoris Field.

Jason McNeil, the game's MVP, carried 23 times for 119 yards, including a 6-yard score with 9:27 remaining after the Dons had narrowed the lead to 16-14 on the previous possession.

``The coaches told us at halftime that we were going to run the ball a lot,'' said McNeil, whose team ran on 49 of 68 plays. ``Our offensive line was controlling the line of scrimmage.''

Glendale (9-2) took an early 6-0 lead as Estevan Estevan (ĕs`təvăn), city (1991 pop. 10,240), S Sask., Canada, on the Souris River near the N.Dak. border. Lignite is mined there, and clay and plastic products are manufactured. Oil, discovered in the 1950s, is also important to the economy. Moreno made field goals of 27 and 31 yards. He added a season-best 44-yarder on the first possession of the second half.

El Camino 31, Moorpark 29: Cameron Merrill's fourth-down pass with 1:47remaining flew over the head of Conrad Meadows to end Moorpark's scoring threat as host El Camino (9-2) held on for the victory in the American Bowl.

After stopping El Camino's Patrick Hill short of the first down on an fourth-and-1 play on the Warriors' 46-yard line, the Raiders had a chance to win.

They drove to El Camino's 27-yard line, but the next threeplays only netted three yards. Merrill then overthrew Meadows on fourth down.

El Camino ran all but twoseconds off the clock before quarterback Boo Jackson ran out of the end zone to give Moorpark a safety. That set up what was a unsuccessful free-kick return for the Raiders to end the game.

Moorpark (9-2) got within 31-27 when receiver Shelton Banks, after getting a lateral from Merrill, threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Meadows.
