JC CROSS COUNTRY: GLENDALE WOMEN WIN WSC TITLE.

CUESTA cuesta (kwĕs`tə), asymmetric ridge characterized by a short, steep escarpment on one side, and a long, gentle slope on the other. It's the women's team, though, not the Glendale men, winner 15 of the past 18 years, that was in the spotlight Tuesday in the WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

Tove Berg won in 18 minutes, 36 seconds over the challenging 5,000-meter course over dusty and dry dirt trails and Liliana Hernandez was third in 19:52 to help Glendale to a 44-62 victory over Bakersfield for its second consecutive title.

The Glendale women finished third in the state meet last season but coach Eddie Lopez believes the Vaqueros are stronger this season with the addition of Berg, 28, a former competitive swimmer from Sweden.

Berg, who won by 70 seconds Tuesday, is undefeated this season against junior-college competition.

Berg, is taking English and physical education classes at Glendale while working full-time.

``It's been a long time since I've been to school,'' Berg said. ``This is a good form of running because it's both individual and team. Right now, I am just trying to fit in on the team. It's been a lot of fun.''

 finished second in the men's 4-mile race in 21:41 but the Raiders were nipped by Oxnard 54-56 for the title.

Canyons was third with 73 points, and defending champion Glendale was fourth at 127.

The top eight teams qualified for the Southern California Championships, Nov. 3 in Lancaster.
