JBoss jBPM 3.1 Expands Business Process Agility; Provides Business Users and Developers with a Common Language that Simplifies the Creation of BPM, Orchestration and Workflow Applications from a Single Engine.

BOSTON -- JBoss(R), Inc., the Professional Open Source company, today announced the release of JBoss jBPM 3.1, the company's powerful Java-based business process management (BPM) system. A core piece of the JBoss Enterprise Middleware Suite (JEMS JEMS Journal of Emergency Medical Services

JBoss Seam combines the two frameworks EJB3 and JSF.
, the company's new framework for building Enterprise Java applications. JBoss jBPM 3.1 is one of three core products announced today that together bolster JEMS as the leading open source platform for service-oriented architecture See SOA.  (SOA (1) (Start Of Authority) The first record in a DNS zone file. ) and move JEMS further into the high-end market.

JBoss jBPM enables Enterprise Java and SOA programmers to create business process and workflow applications, business process orchestration orchestration

and web application page flows from a single, flexible and scalable process engine. This latest release tightly integrates with JBoss Seam, enabling programmers to develop complex process-driven applications and diagram user interactions with greater ease than ever.

"Enterprise business demands are constantly changing but JBoss jBPM provides stability, cost efficiency and ease-of-use when updating processes or creating new ones," said Pierre Fricke, director of product management, JBoss, Inc. "This new release ensures developers and executives are on the same page, enabling them to spend more time generating revenue producing processes and less dealing with unnecessary complexity. This latest version of JBoss jBPM reinforces our effort to extend the capabilities of JEMS and deliver flexible process automation to the mass market with a scalable SOA platform."

eFORCE, a JBoss Systems Integration partner, has built XPFlow, an application that uses JBoss jBPM. XPFlow enables brand licensors to manage their complex enterprise licensing processes. Nitin Keskar, Chief of Technology Delivery, commented: "The flexibility of JBoss jPBM has proven to be extremely powerful for complex business applications. We chose JBoss jBPM as the workflow engine Workflow engine is a software application meant to manage and execute modeled business processes.

It is a key component in workflow technology. It will typically make use of a database server.
for XPFlow to provide business users the ability to rapidly create and modify their licensing-related business processes dynamically based on their brand asset characteristics and the contractual relationships with their licensees."

Key Features and Functionality

JBoss jBPM 3.1 is a pluggable, embeddable architecture which makes it easy for enterprises to organize interactions between their applications and services. New features include:

--Simplified programming model - JBoss jBPM's process-oriented programming Process oriented programming is a programming paradigm that separates the concerns of data structures and the concurrent processes that act upon them. The data structures in this case are typically persistent, complex, and large scale - the subject of general purpose applications, as  model combines the best of Java and declarative programming Declarative programming is a term with two distinct meanings, both of which are in current use.

According to one definition, a program is "declarative" if it describes what something is like, rather than how to create it.
techniques. This means developers can structure their software around easy to understand process graphs that allow executives and developers to speak the same language facilitating a more agile implementation of the processes required by enterprises.

--Flexible architecture - Because the core BPM engine is separated from its process language environments, it can be embedded or plugged into any other application. This allows developers to extend or customize business processes at any level they choose.

--Graph-oriented programming - JBoss jBPM is built on a graph-oriented programming model, which is a simple and solid foundation for developing and deploying graph-oriented process languages. The graph-oriented programming foundation supports multiple process languages optimized for different environments such as web services (1) Loosely, any online service delivered over the Web. Such usage appears in articles from non-technical sources, but not in IT-oriented publications, because definition #2 below describes the correct use of the term.  and Java and is a key differentiator.

--Multi-language support - JBoss jBPM supports the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL See WSBPEL.

BPEL - Web Services Business Process Execution Language
) for business process orchestration of web services. JBoss jBPM also supports jBPM Process Definition Language (jPDL), a Java-based process-oriented programming model that brings workflow and BPM to the Java development environment. Both enable the business user to modify or create new business process workflows in a process language optimized for the business problem and IT environment at hand.

--Visual Process Designer - The JBoss jBPM Visual Process Designer now supports all process nodes in jPDL making the visual development environment more powerful for business process designers.

--Integration with JBoss Seam - The JBoss Seam application framework supports jPDL as its business process language, making it easier for developers to write applications with complex workflows, web application page flows and user interactions. By using JBoss jBPM with JBoss Seam, advanced and intuitive web application page flows can be developed without requiring expensive BPM or workflow products that are not integrated into an easy to use programming model such as JBoss Seam.

--Asynchronous process continuation - Presents developers with greater control over how and when business processes are executed. This results in greater flexibility and more ability to handle business process conditions efficiently.
