to its final performances this month at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis, JAZZDANCE by Danny Buraczeski has been a vital, exuberant force on the contemporary American dance scene. The company has expanded and re-defined our idea of jazz dance and given us a choreographic language capable of communication, innovation, and depth. Although his dancing is rooted in the vernacular forms that are at the heart of jazz, his movement research and choreographic risk-taking result in work that both honors and subverts tradition. Buraczeski's is an original choreographic voice--the movement is weighted, angular, swinging, pulsing, rhythmically complex, coiled, curvy, and flowing. The company's repertory includes pieces created to swing, klezmer klezmer (klĕz`mər), form of instrumental folk music developed in the Eastern European Jewish community. The style had its beginnings in the Middle Ages; its name is a Yiddishized version of the Hebrew klei zemir , blues, and compositions by some of the jazz greats. "Running a dance company for 25 years feels like more than one lifetime," says Buraczeski. "This decision has been some time in coming, as the things that a dance company needs to remain vital and healthy have slowly fallen away. The bottom line is that I can no longer provide dancers with what they deserve, and that is quite painful." Buraczeski is proud of all that his company has achieved and is now looking to the future. He has accepted a position as visiting artist at Southern Methodist University Southern Methodist University, at Dallas, Tex.; United Methodist; coeducational; chartered 1911.
