JAZZ JAZZTRAX TO CELEBRATE 15TH ANNIVERSARY WITH 30 TOP ACTS.

Is it a smooth-jazz festival, a CD sampler or a terrific October getaway?

Actually, the 15th annual JazzTrax Festival on Catalina Island Catalina Island: see Santa Catalina.  is all three. However you slice it, the event - which kicks off Friday - amounts to a gorgeous way to spend a fall day or an entire weekend.

The music fete features 30 of the genre's top performers, including Bob James Bob James can refer to different people:

  • Bob James (baseball), a baseball player
  • Bob James (rock singer), former singer of Montrose from 1974 to 1976.

``The nearly perfect weather, vacation atmosphere and quaint feeling of the island is part of the reason for our continued success,'' says Art Good, the event's founder and producer.

The JazzTrax Festival opens Friday through Oct. 7, and on the next two consecutive weekends. Ten different acts perform each weekend.

The concerts were launched in 1987, the same year popular smooth-jazz station KTWV-FM (94.7) - commonly known as the Wave - hit the airwaves. During the festival's 15-year run, top acts such as Grover Washington Jr., Earl Klugh, David Benoit, Lee Ritenour, Rick Braun and Keiko Matsui have graced the Wrigley stage.

Also, in celebration of JazzTrax's anniversary, Narada Jazz has issued ``Catalina Island Nights,'' a new album featuring tracks by many of those well-known musicians.

To accommodate the 18,000 fans expected at the festival, a variety of travel and hotel packages are available, including a day rate of $50 for boat travel and afternoon concert tickets for fans who want a single-day trip.

``You can come on any one of the festival days, stay for an afternoon or evening session and be able to return the same day, with the last boats returning after the night's final performance,'' Good said.
