 will be held Friday for jazz historian Floyd Levin Floyd Levin (September 24, 1922 - January 29, 2007) was a jazz historian who has been published in many magazines, including Down Beat, Jazz Journal International and American Rag. , a longtime Studio City resident who died Monday. He was 83.

Levin was a contributor to jazz periodicals including ``Down Beat,'' ``Jazz Journal International'' and ``American Rag'' for many years. His book, ``Classic Jazz -- A Personal View of the Music and the Musicians,'' was published in 2000.

His passion for the musical genre led him to record oral history interviews preserved at the Smithsonian Institution Smithsonian Institution, research and education center, at Washington, D.C.; founded 1846 under terms of the will of James Smithson of London, who in 1829 bequeathed his fortune to the United States to create an establishment for the "increase and diffusion of  in Washington, D.C., and the Jazz Archive at Tulane University History

He also led a worldwide fundraising campaign to erect a statue to honor jazz musician Louis Armstrong that stands in Armstrong Park in New Orleans.

The Los Angeles Jazz Society honored Levin in 1996 with their Leonard Feather Communication Award.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille; son, Dennis; grandson, Marc, and great-granddaughter, Sydney Ashton Levin.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Mount Sinai Chapel at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive.
