NEWHALL - A local janitorial service agreed to pay $1.9 million in back wages to 775 employees who may have been shorted overtime pay, state and federal labor regulators investigating the firm said Wednesday.

 requires employers to pay workers at 1 1/2 times the regular rate for all hours over eight per day. Overtime pay also applies for the first eight hours worked on the seventh consecutive day in a workweek.

The settlement compensates Global employees for work performed prior to Feb. 11, 2003.

Global Building Services, which also operates in Arizona Arizona (âr'əzō`nə), state in the southwestern United States. It is bordered by Utah (N), New Mexico (E), Mexico (S), and, across the Colorado R., Nevada and California (W). , Nevada and Texas, said it learned of the investigation in late 2002 and has ``cooperated fully'' with authorities to change its pay practices.

``We are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement with the Department of Labor to compensate our employees,'' the company said in a statement Wednesday. ``The company is fully compliant, and we look forward to focusing on serving the needs of our retail customers. We feel this is all behind us now.''

The investigation began in late 2002, after a union tipped off federal labor regulators, which also handled settlement negotiations, said Dean Fryer, a state Division of Labor spokesman.

``They took the lead on the settlement because it involved several states,'' he said. ``It's quite an involved process.''
