JANIS IAN SIGNS LONG-TERM PACT WITH MORGAN CREEK RECORDS

LOS ANGELES, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Singer/songwriter Janis Ian has signed a long-term contract with Morgan Creek Records. Her first album in a decade, entitled "Breaking Silence," finds Ian's voice in peak form and her songwriting craft as spry as ever. Ian co-produced the album with Jeff Balding. Release date is set for June 8.
For 2 1/2 decades, starting with the 1967 debut of her first single, "Society's Child," on a Leonard Bernstein TV special, the name Janis Ian was synonymous with socially and interpersonally aware songs including the multiple Grammy-winning "At Seventeen."
Ian always approached her career on her own terms, even if it meant turning down major opportunities -- including an offer to record songs in "The Graduate" and "You Light Up My Life," because of her policy of recording only songs she's penned.
Since "At Seventeen," she has recorded duets with Mel Torme and Chick Corea and has been a background vocalist for James Brown and Leonard Cohen. Her songs have been recorded by Bette Midler, Amy Grant, Cher, Nanci Griffith, Joan Baez, Marti Jones and Hugh Masakela, among others. To this date, she commands much respect from individuals in the music community.
Ian will tour Japan in late April where she will be special guest at Budokan on April 22. Her song "Tattoo" is the official theme song of the Liberation Festival celebrating the liberation of Holland from Nazi occupation during World War II.
"Breaking Silence" does precisely that, ending a 10-year hiatus as a recording artist. In the time since her last album, Ian has studied theater and dance and has relocated to Nashville, where she's reconstructed her life after losing all of her property to the Internal Revenue Service as a result of faulty business management. The album, co-produced by Ian and Balding, marks a new era in a distinguished career, as well as a new relationship with a new label.
