 TO BE INDUCTED INTO 1992 NATIONAL SALES HALL OF FAME
 NEW YORK, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- James E. Preston, chairman and chief executive officer of Avon Products, Inc., will be inducted into The 1992 National Sales Hall of Fame at a gala awards dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on Tuesday, March 24.
 The master of ceremonies for the event will be Hugh Downs, television journalist and co-host of ABC-TV's "20/20." Also making an appearance will be Walter Cronkite who will present the "Walter Cronkite Master Communicator of the Year" award to Downs. The dinner chairman is Eugene M. Freedman, chairman of Coopers & Lybrand.
 The National Sales Hall of Fame is sponsored by The Sales & Marketing Executives of Greater New York, a professional, not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1932 by a group of sales executives led by Thomas J. Watson, Sr., founder of IBM Corporation. The National Sales Hall of Fame honors unique sales achievements in all fields. It also promotes the profession of selling as a creative and honorable career.
 "There's no greater honor than recognition by one's peers," says Preston. "I am proud to be included among he distinguished professional members of the National Sales Hall of Fame."
 Laurel Cutler, vice chairman and worldwide director of marketing planning, Foote, Cone & Belding/Leber Katz Partners, will present the award to Preston.
 Avon Products, Inc., with 1.5 million representatives, has the largest sales force in the world. It is a global leader in direct selling and marketing of beauty and related products. Avon's products are sold to women and their families in more than 100 countries.
 Preston joined Avon in 1964 as a management trainee in the company's distribution center in Rye, N.Y. During the years 1965 through 1970, he served in varying supervisory and management positions in the marketing and operations areas at the world headquarters in New York City.
 In 1971, he was elected vice president of corporate personnel, and the following year, group vice president of marketing. He was named group vice president of Field Operations-Worldwide in 1976, and later that year was elected senior vice president of Field Operations- Worldwide.
 IN 1977, Preston assumed the responsibilities of corporate executive vice president and was elected to the board of directors. In November of 1981, he assumed the additional position of president and chief executive officer of the Avon Division and named to the corporate management committee.
 In May of 1988 he was elected president and chief operating officer of the corporation and in September was named chief executive officer. He assumed the additional responsibility of chairman of the board in January of 1988.
 Preston serves on the board of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association, is a member of the board and treasurer of the Fragrance Foundation, a director of F.W. Woolworth Co. and serves on the board of the American Institute for Managing Diversity. He also serves on the boards of The Business Council of New York State and the American Woman's Economic Development Corporation. In addition, he serves on The Salvation Army of Greater New York Advisory Board. He is past chairman of the Direct Selling Association and served as chairman of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association.
 Preston is a 1955 graduate of Northwestern University.
 The other inductees into the 1992 National Sales Hall of Fame are: Joseph A. Antonini, chairman/CEO, Kmart Corporation; Cathleen Black, president/CEO, American Newspaper Publishers Association; Ewing M. Kauffman, chairman emeritus, Marion Merrell Dow, Inc.; James W. Kinnear, president/CEO, Texaco Inc.; and Reginald F. Lewis, chairman/CEO, TLC Beatrice International Holdings, Inc. Thomas J. Watson, Sr. will receive a posthumous award.
 Nominees voted into The National Sales Hall of Fame by the board of trustees must fulfill the following criteria:
 -- Be a recognized leader in his or her industry;
 -- Have a record of individual sales/marketing leadership achievement;
 -- Be a frequent supporter and contributor to regional or national philanthropic projects;
 -- Show strong support for careers in business with an emphasis on sales and marketing;
 -- Be recognized as a consummate professional by his or her peers.
