JAMES E. JOHNSON JR. NAMED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF MONK-AUSTIN, INC.

FARMVILLE, N.C., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- James E. (Jay) Johnson Jr., a partner in the Womble Carlyle Sandridge and Rice law firm (Charlotte office), has been named to the board of directors of Monk-Austin, Inc. (NYSE: MK), the world's fourth largest independent leaf tobacco merchant and processor.
Elected by the company's board at its February meeting, Johnson becomes Monk-Austin's second outside director. In December 1992, Dr. Thomas F. Keller, dean of the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, became the company's first outside director following its initial public stock offering in November.
Monk-Austin's Chairman, William C. Monk, said the appointment adds considerable strength to the company's board. "We are delighted to have a lawyer of Jay's stature on our board," said Monk.
Johnson, 63, holds bachelor's and law degrees from Wake Forest University and earned a graduate degree in taxation from New York University School of Law. He is a trustee of Wake Forest University and serves as general counsel and board member of the Charlotte, N.C. Chamber of Commerce.
In addition, Johnson is a board member of the Medical Center of Bowman Gray School of Medicine and the North Carolina Baptist Hospital, and the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Hospital Authority.
Johnson is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American College of Tax Counsel; a trustee of the Southern Federal Tax Institute; and a member of the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia and the Mecklenberg County Bar Association.
Monk-Austin, Inc., traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "MK," buys and processes leaf tobacco worldwide and sells processed tobacco to manufacturers of cigarettes and other consumer products.
The company has an extensive network of purchasing and processing operations in five major regions of the world where export-quality flue-cured and burley tobaccos are grown. In addition to the United States, the company has facilities located in Brazil, Malawi, Mexico and Zimbabwe. Monk-Austin also operates in other major growing countries around the world.
