JAMES, THIELE ELECTED TO ST. PAUL COMPANIES BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 ST. PAUL, Minn., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Ronald James and Patrick Thiele were elected to The St. Paul Companies' (NYSE: SPC) board of directors at the corporation's annual shareholders' meeting today. James and Thiele join 11 other directors, who were re-elected at the meeting.
 James, 42, is vice president and chief executive officer-Minnesota of U S WEST Communications, Inc., a U S WEST subsidiary that provides communications services to more than 25 million residential and business customers in 14 Western and Midwestern states.
 James joined U S WEST Communications, Inc. (formerly Northwestern Bell Telephone Company) in 1971 as a management assistant in Des Moines, Iowa. After promotions to a number of supervisory and management positions, he was named district manager in 1977 and division manager in 1979. From 1982 to 1985, he held a number of general manager positions and was named vice president in 1985. He assumed his present position in January 1990.
 He is a director of Ceridian Corporation, Minneapolis, and Great Hall Investment Funds, Inc., Minneapolis. James also serves on the boards of many business, community and arts organizations, including the Minnesota Business Partnership, the United Way of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He is president of the board of directors of the Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis, and co-chair of the Minnesota Governor's Action for Children Commission.
 James received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Doane College in 1971 and now serves as a trustee of the college.
 Thiele, 42, is executive vice president and chief financial officer of The St. Paul Companies. He joined the company as an investment officer in 1978 and was later promoted to senior corporate development officer and senior investment officer. He was named vice president- corporate development in 1986 and vice president-finance in 1988. In 1989, he became senior vice president and chief financial officer and was named executive vice president in 1991.
 Before joining The St. Paul Companies, Thiele worked for the National Bank of Detroit and Wainwright Securities, Inc., New York. He is a director of The John Nuveen Company, Chicago; Hook-SupeRx, Inc., Cincinnati; and Wenger Corp., Owatonna, Minn. He also serves on the boards of the Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis, and The College of St. Catherine, St. Paul.
 Thiele holds a bachelor's (1972) and a master's (1975) degree in finance from the University of Wisconsin.
 At today's shareholders' meeting, Douglas W. Leatherdale, St. Paul chairman and chief executive officer, also noted the departure of three board members: William A. Andres, Lawrence E. Honig and John A. Rollwagen.
