JACOBS SUBSIDIARY WINS CONTRACT FOR NUCLEAR WASTE VITRIFICATION PLANT

PASADENA, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE: JEC) announced today that Jacobs/H&G, a subsidiary of Jacobs, has been awarded a contract by British Nuclear Fuels PLC (BNFL) to handle design on the new Windscale Vitrification Plant (WVP) Line 3 project at Sellafield, Cumbria, United Kingdom.
The amount of the contract was not disclosed.
This contract calls for developing the process design of the new plant through Class B and up to the Class A definition stage. The plant itself will be used to feed, condition, and vitrify highly radioactive liquid waste, demanding the use of the most sophisticated chemical, instrumentation/control and mechanical engineering techniques. The new Line 3 facility will be adjacent to the existing WVP and integrated with Lines 1 and 2 in the existing plant.
The WVP Line 3 facility is the third major installation at Sellafield for which Jacobs/H&G has provided professional engineering services in recent years. Earlier projects were the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP) and the Waste Packaging and Encapsulation Plant (WPEP). This continuing involvement in advanced projects for BNFL strengthens Jacobs/H&G's position at the forefront of nuclear process technology.
The work itself will be executed by an H&G Task Force, involving BNFL personnel, based at H&G's office in Stockport.
Use of vitrification technology as a method of treatment of high level radioactive waste prior to disposal is currently planned at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facilities in the United States. Under a subcontract at DOE's Savannah River Site in South Carolina, Jacobs is providing support to ongoing efforts to start-up a new high-level radioactive waste vitrification facility. In a related development, Jacobs last week opened a new office in Oak Ridge, Tenn., the site of one of DOE's largest energy research and weapons production facilities. This new office will focus on technology development and integration including bringing environmental and nuclear process technology from H&G to the United States.
Jacobs Engineering Group, headquartered in Pasadena, provides single-source consulting, engineering, design, architectural, environmental and hazardous waste management, procurement, construction, construction management, contract maintenance and operations services to government and industry worldwide. Jacobs has 26 offices located throughout the United States, United Kingdom and Ireland.
