JACOBS ENGINEERING/HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW PROVIDE WORLD'S "FIRST" FOR CLEAN POWER GENERATION

SOMERSET, N.J., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE: JEC) announced today that its subsidiary in the United Kingdom, Humphreys & Glasgow (through its associate, Nykomb Synergetics), has licensed ISAB of Genoa, Italy, to use its Clean Power Generation (CPG) technology on a major power station project at ISAB's refinery in Sicily.
This is a world's "first" for a unique British technology which permits ISAB, in the context of the Gasification/Power Generation Unit licensed from other licensors, to produce electricity at high efficiency from fossil fuel feedstocks -- in this case, high sulphur content refinery residues.
The new generation power station will consist of a licensed gasification process together with gas and steam turbines in an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) arrangement selling 500 MW of electricity to the Italian state power board ENEL. A large proportion of the gasifier product will be processed to yield hydrogen and steam for use in the refinery. CPG will provide a simple and highly reliable linkage for the major gasification, sulphur removal and electricity generating units.
Used in this way, CPG establishes the necessary commercial confidence for major companies to invest in IGCC power stations.
Patented throughout Europe and the United States, CPG has been developed to work using available equipment and components already proven in the petrochemical and chemical industries.
This breakthrough with the application of CPG to a gasification power station paves the way for the process to be used not only for new power projects but also to retrofit existing traditional power stations currently burning low-grade fossil fuel feedstocks -- including coal.
Nykomb and Humphreys & Glasgow, assisted by the British Technology Group, are examining commercial opportunities for new-generation power stations which provide better environmental improvements than Flue Gas Desulphurization. These modernized power stations would be Multi-Fuel Generators capable of running on the most economic fuel of the day.
