JACOBS AWARDED CONTRACT FOR $10 MILLION POSTAL FACILITY

JACOBS AWARDED CONTRACT FOR $10 MILLION POSTAL FACILITY
PASADENA, Calif., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE: JEC) announced today the award of a contract by the U.S. Postal Service, Western Region, to provide engineering services for a $10 million postal facility in the City of Industry, Calif.
The new 200,000-square-foot facility will be a delivery distribution center, utilizing state-of-the-art delivery bar code sorters. The sorters are expected to aid mail carrier performance by automatically presorting mail into carrier routes, according to postal authorities.
Jacobs will engineer renovations for the former Alhambra Post Office in the City of Industry, according to Jacobs' Group Vice President Gerald L. Stevenson. The renovation work for the new delivery distribution center is expected to be complete by June 1993.
The project work is divided into three phases, Stevenson said. Phase one will consist of a building study of the former post office and a construction cost estimate to upgrade the facility to current building codes, including all seismic, handicap, life safety and security laws and regulations. Jacobs will also perform a condition analysis and make an upgrade recommendation for all building systems such as heating and ventilation, power distribution, etc.
Jacobs' phase two work will include the detailed engineering design. Phase three will involve an option for Jacobs to provide the project's construction administration services.
"Jacobs was chosen for this project out of 48 competing firms," Stevenson said. "We were picked because of our success with the engineering and design of the new $61 million, 520,000-square-foot Alhambra General Mail Facility and Warehouse, which opened in 1990."
That facility and the recent design finish of the $130 million, 780,000-square-foot general mail and vehicle maintenance facilities in Santa Clarita, Calif. brings the total amount of postal facilities successfully engineered by Jacobs in the past six years to approximately $225 million.
Jacobs Engineering Group, headquartered in Pasadena, provides single-source consulting, engineering, design, architectural, environmental and hazardous waste management, procurement, construction, construction management, contract maintenance and operations services to government and industry worldwide. Jacobs has 24 offices located throughout the United States and Ireland.
