J. WILLIAM GRIMES ELECTED CEO OF MULTIMEDIA, INC.

GREENVILLE, S.C., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Walter E. Bartlett, chairman of the board of Multimedia, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: MMEDC), today announced that J. William Grimes was elected president and chief executive officer of the corporation. Grimes has been the company's president and chief operating officer. Bartlett, who has held the dual offices of chairman and chief executive officer, will continue to serve as chairman of the board, a position he has held since 1989.
Bartlett said when making the announcement: "Bill Grimes brings strong leadership skills to his new position at Multimedia. He is recognized for the success he has achieved in the media communications business, and he has gained a unique perception of the industry's potential and challenges." Grimes said, "The responsibilities that our board of directors and Walter have delegated to me today are most significant, and I look forward to working closely with them in directing our company's future growth."
Grimes joined Multimedia as vice president-corporate group executive in August 1991. In that post, he worked on special assignments out of the chairman's office and assumed management of Multimedia Broadcasting for several months until a new division president was named. He was elected president and chief operating officer and a member of the company's board of directors in April 1992.
Prior to joining Multimedia, Grimes was president and CEO of Hallmark's Univision Holdings, the country's largest Spanish-speaking communications company.
From 1982-1988, he was president and CEO of ESPN, having joined that company in 1981 as executive vice president. Under his direction, ESPN became the largest cable television network in America, increasing revenues nearly ten-fold and more than tripling its production of live, original programming. His achievements at ESPN were recognized in 1987 when he was named Cable Television Executive of the Year by CTAM, USA Today Sports Executive of the Year and Television/CATV Executive of the Year by The Gallagher Report.
Grimes has also held the positions of vice president, CBS Broadcast Group; senior vice president, CBS Radio; vice president-Personnel, CBS, Inc.; vice president-AM Stations, CBS Radio; vice president, general manager, WEEI Radio, Boston; and vice president, general manager, CBS Radio Spot Sales.
During his career, Grimes has been a director of the National Cable Television Association and the National Association of Broadcasters, and a director and member of the executive committee of the Cable Programming Academy and the Cable Advertising Bureau. He is now a member of the board of visitors of the Kenan-Flagler School of Business of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a member of the board of directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Grimes is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College. He and his wife, the former Barbara Leathers, have three children.
