 J. MICHAEL DURRIE NAMED PRESIDENT OF GENERAL MOTORS JAPAN
TOKYO, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- J. Michael Durrie has been named president, General Motors Japan, effective July 1. He replaces Richard R. Johnson who is retiring from General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) following 35 years of service.
"We're delighted with the prospects of having a high-calibre person like Mike Durrie take the lead of our GM Japan operations following the exceptional performance of Dick Johnson," said Thomas S. McDaniel, vice president for GM's Asian and Pacific Operations. "Mike's 12 years of international experience and extensive knowledge of market dynamics gained through a series of diverse assignments are well suited to our long-term goals for GM's future expansion and success in Japan."
Durrie was born Aug. 25, 1937, in Oakland, Calif., and completed his undergraduate work in psychology at Stanford University in 1960.
He began his GM career in 1960 as a field representative for General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) in Oakland, Calif. After several assignments, Durrie was named assistant branch manager in GMAC's office in Rome, Italy, from 1969 until 1973.
In June, 1973, he was appointed control branch manager in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and 14 months later was named GMAC regional finance manager for Australia and New Zealand, with headquarters in Melbourne. In November, 1978, he was transferred to GM do Brasil and was elected treasurer in 1980.
In November, 1981, Durrie returned to GMAC in Detroit as director of overseas and Canadian borrowings. He was named GMAC's director of plans in March, 1984, and elected vice president of plans in January, 1986. A year later, he was elected a director of GMAC, member of the executive committee, and a group vice president in charge of marketing.
Durrie was named vice president in charge of Central U.S. operations for GMAC in February, 1988, and 13 months later was appointed general director of fleet and government sales, General Motors Customer Sales and Service Staff, the position he held prior to his latest assignment.
