Iwerks Entertainment Contributes to Production of 11 New Large Format Features Spotlighted in GSTA Film Festival.

The GSTA Film Festival operates as a film marketplace for the industry, screening selected new releases in their entirety for the consideration of large format theater operators. Five of the films in which Iwerks played a role in production, are among those selected for the GSTA Film Festival. The films are Haunted haunt

The other six films to which Iwerks contributed will be part of GSTA's Works in Progress showcase -- noteworthy films expected to be released in the next 12 to 18 months. These are Kilimanjaro: Mountain of Many Faces (Houston Museum of Natural Science The Houston Museum of Natural Science is a science museum located on the northern border of Hermann Park in Houston, Texas, USA. The museum was established in 1909 by the Houston Museum and Scientific Society ); Courage (Sky High Entertainment); Manatee-The Forgotten Mermaid (Machine Age Films); Lewis & Clark: The Great Journey West (Destination Cinema); Forces of Nature: Natural Disasters (Destination Cinema) and Equus: The Story of the Horse (Imax).

The Human Body marks a technological milestone, because it features Iwerks 15/70 and 8/70 cameras for all of the large format photography. The Iwerks 15/70 camera is a relatively new addition to the company's well-established camera department. The industrial designed camera features a built-in color video. It fits on many existing heads, including a number that are used for 35mm cameras. Its lenses are completely re-barreled Hasselblads, ranging from 30mm to 800mm. It shoots at frame rates up to 48 fps. Award-winning large format cinematographer Reed Smoot Several notable individuals share the name Reed Smoot:
  • Reed Smoot (U. S. Senator) (1862-1941), United States Senator and leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Reed Smoot (cinematographer), specializing in IMAX documentaries
 was Director of Photography on The Human Body, and has since also used it for two Disney large format film projects. The Iwerks camera department also offers, in addition to 15/70 and 8/70 cameras, 3D rigs, aerial and underwater Underwater

The film on which Iwerks had the most extensive involvement was *N SYNC: Bigger Than Live. Doug Yellin, Iwerks' Executive Producer, headed the on-location production team for this film, which combines footage of five live concerts performed by the superstar band *N SYNC last summer. The entire film was shot with Iwerks 8/70 cameras. *N SYNC: Bigger Than Live is a production of Really BIG Film Corp., executive produced by Jonathan Sanger, Ed Elbert and Really Big Film Corp. partners Linda Nelson and Michael Madison in association with Brent Bolthouse Productions and Lion Limited Partnership.

Since January 2001, under the direction of Iwerks' VP of Film Production Services Scott Shepley, Iwerks has been offering large format optical printing and format conversion services to the industry. Iwerks has performed ten (Journey of Man, Across the Sea of Time, Wings of Courage, Destiny in Space, Ocean Oasis, Haunted Castle, Dolphins, T-Rex, Bears and Mexico) format conversions in that time, including Haunted Castle. Iwerks supplied format conversion services to create the 8/70 version of the 3D film, Haunted Castle, from 15/70.
