It may come as a surprise to readers of National Review to learn that we once shared a floor of our office building with Vibe, a magazine dedicated to the doings of such avant-garde popular musicians as Jadakiss, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Twista, OutKast, Jay-Z, and Ja Rule.

* It may come as a surprise to readers of NATIONAL REVIEW to learn that we once shared a floor of our office building with Vibe, a magazine dedicated to the doings of such avant-garde popular musicians as Jadakiss, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Twista, OutKast, Jay-Z, and Ja Rule. Well, a magazine like Vibe must naturally sponsor an awards ceremony, to honor excellence in doing whatever it is that Jadakiss and his (her? their?) colleagues do. We regret to report that the solemn proceedings at this year's ceremony were rudely interrupted. "Hip-hop mogul"--there's glory for you!--Dr. Dre was punched by an unidentified young man on stage. A member of the good doctor's entourage, an aspiring artiste known as Young Buck, unhinged by righteous indignation, thereupon produced a knife and stabbed the assailant. The scuttlebutt in Vibe circles, with whom we remain on intimate terms, is that this very regrettable incident was arranged by Dr. Dre's longtime nemesis, Suge Knight. Naturally we hope this is not true, and that order and decorum will return to the staid precincts of Vibe, where, in happier times, we have enjoyed many a sedate game of whist over petits fours and chamomile tea.
