TAXES

Argentina imposed a controversial tax on all exports. The tax, ranging as high as 10% on the value of goods, could generate US$700 million in 2002.

AVIATION

Peruvian airline AeroContinente filed a lawsuit seeking up to US$1 billion from the Chilean government for losses suffered in 2001 when Chile grounded its planes, froze its assets and arrested airline officials on money-laundering charges. The charges were thrown out by a Chilean judge.

Transporte Aereo Militar de Ecuador (Tame) was named in a lawsuit filed in Miami by U.S. relatives of passengers who died in a January jet crash. The Ecuadoran airline's Boeing 727-100, with 92 people aboard, was headed for Call, Colombia.

Mexico's Federal Competition Commission ruled that the country's No. 1 beverage company, Coca-Cola, engages in monopolistic practices. Following complaints by Grupo Aga and Pepsi-Cola Mexicana, the commission found among other things that CocaCola offered discounts for clients that refused to do business with its competitors.
