LABOR

A U.S. judge dismissed a lawsuit that sought to recover as much as US$1 billion in wages for Mexicans who worked in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  under a special program during World War II. ENERGY

Two U.S. surety companies must pay Petrobras subsidiaries Braspetro and Brasoil more than US$300 million, a U.S. District Court ruled. But the insurance companies refused to pay the bonds when cost overruns caused the projects to be abandoned in 1997.

BANKING

Arthur Andersen LLP, based in Chicago, was once one of the "Big Five" accounting firms (the other four are PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young and KPMG), performing
, accusing it of conspiring with Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, a Spanish banking giant, and two Brazilian government officials. The lawsuit says Andersen and BBVA BBVA Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (First Bank of Spain)  wrote a report undervaluing Excel, which BBVA was trying to buy.

CORRUPTION

Mexican bottled propane propane, CH3CH2CH3, colorless, gaseous alkane. It is readily liquefied by compression and cooling. It melts at −189.9°C; and boils at −42.2°C;.  gas distributor Thermogas filed a lawsuit claiming a government official broke the law by taking a job at Tractebel just months after giving the Belgian energy company a contract. Energy Regulatory Commission President Hector Olea resigned five months after his five-member commission awarded Tractebel a contract to expand natural gas distribution in Guadalajara and, the lawsuit says, took a job with Tractebel in Houston. Olea, who denies the charges, is currently president of Tractebel in Mexico.

AVIATION

Argentine airline Southern Winds sued Aerolineas Argentina after Aerolineas asked Argentina's Transportation Ministry to halt Southern Wind flights from Buenos Aires Buenos Aires (bwā`nəs ī`rēz, âr`ēz, Span. bwā`nōs ī`rās), city and federal district (1991 pop.  to Miami. The lawsuit says Aerolineas took the action even though it knew Southern Winds had proper U.S. and Argentine authorizations. Southern Winds says the move was part of a campaign to discredit it.
