the planet's media, you surf upon quite a variety of news headlines that would lead one to believe that in headlines that would lead one to believe that we have a lot more to fear than underinflation. A headline from Seattle and one from New Jersey blared that motorists were killed by tires. The state of Florida claims that tires are killing coral reefs coral reefs, limestone formations produced by living organisms, found in shallow, tropical marine waters. In most reefs, the predominant organisms are stony corals, colonial cnidarians that secrete an exoskeleton of calcium carbonate (limestone). : It's not the tires. Tires without a rim and wheel are somewhat benign benign /be·nign/ (be-nin´) not malignant; not recurrent; favorable for recovery.

be·nign
adj.
Of no danger to health, especially relating to a tumorous growth; not malignant.
. But headline writers find it easier to call the whole wheel or a failed engineering project "tires."

Historically, tires have received little respect. What other part of the car are you encouraged to kick? The industry has brought a lot upon itself', but this problem crosses every manufacturing line. Not once in any of the accident stories of the Florida reef press has the brand of tire(s) been mentioned. In the state of Washington, "tires" have been blamed in numerous accidents and a loss of life. Unlike the blowout Blowout

The tire reef story out of Florida HASs been reported ad nauseam ad nau·se·am

over every form of media. Florida is spending $2 million to remove over 700,000 tires from the floor of the ocean. The tires were dumped there in the 1970s to create an artificial reef An artificial reef is a man-made, underwater structure, typically built for the purpose of promoting marine life in areas of generally featureless bottom. Artificial reefs may also serve to improve hydrodynamics for surfing or to control beach erosion. . What was considered a win-win endeavor 30 years ago is now a major threat to coral reefs. Tires are getting a bad rap here. Tires are not constructed to become reefs.

A story about rent-to-own tires that ran in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was somewhat uplifting. The AJ-C reports that tires have joined the select group of items, including furniture, housing, entertainment equipment, etc., that people are will ing to pay more than cost for instant acquisition. Also, its growing trend. Five years ago, only 15 places in the country offered rent-to-own tires; now there is an estimated 160, including seven chains.

And as good as this might be for people's perception of tires, it s really not the tires. Once again, it is the whole wheel people are buying. It s just easier to write tires.
