An inside look at four of the nation's black-owned spas

When it's time for a break, do you know where to turn for relief? Try a black-owned day a for stress management and beauty basics, Why? According to Patricia French, owner of Gazelle gazelle, name for the many species of delicate, graceful antelopes of the genus Gazella, inhabiting arid, open country. Skin Care Center and Day Spa (www.Irmaden sonskincare.com) offers deep cleansing facials, hot stone massages, manicures, pedicures, acne treatments, and skin peels. This salon is small and cozy, and, according to its owner, "Businesspeople like it because they don't have to worry about privacy."

St. Louis-based Evolutions Day Spa (www.evolutionsdayspaqpg.com) specializes in stress management. Aside from the more popular spa services, such as massages, facials, body wraps, manicures, and pedicures, the facility also features hypnotherapy hypnotherapy /hyp·no·ther·a·py/ (hip?no-ther´ah-pe) the use of hypnosis in the treatment of disease.

"When I first started Evolutions as a stress management and wellness center, I used hypnosis for stress management," says Evolutions' owner, Areatha Love, who is also a registered nurse, registered hypnotist, and certified massage therapist. "But clients started requesting hypnosis for weight loss, and I have physicians that want me to do hypnosis with their patients that are in labor. I also use hypnosis for people with phobias and problems with nail biting."

And don't just save spa services for special occasions, advises Nona George Cohen, owner of The Body Clinic in Los Angeles (www.the-body-clinic.com). Her establishment offers facials, stress-reduction bodywork bodywork /body·work/ (-wurk?) a general term for therapeutic methods that center on the body for the promotion of physical health and emotional and spiritual well-being, including massage, various systems of touch and manipulation, relaxation techniques, and practices designed to affect the body's energy flow., pamper packages, and paraffin treatments, as well as waxing. "It's a treat that's essential to our well-being," advises Cohen. "At some point you have to regroup, so leave your cell phone at home and turn the pagers off."
