CUNDY'S HARBOR, Maine--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2004

pizza. In Philly, it's a cheese steak sandwich. In Memphis, it's ribs. In Maine it's a lobster roll A Lobster Roll is a sandwich of lobster salad, generally served on either a hot-dog or hamburger style bun.

It is one of the specialties of the "Lobster Roll" restaurant on Montauk Highway in the Hamptons on New York's Long Island.
. They're found at roadside stands, lobster shacks and restaurants up and down the coast.

But we all can't go to Maine for the summer, and not everyone wants to cook and crack open a live Maine lobster. Maine's favorite summer treat has been hard to find in Chicago, Philly or Memphis. Until now.

This summer, the Hancock Gourmet Lobster Company of Cundy's Harbor, the oldest commercial lobstering community in Maine, has introduced the Downeast Lobster Roll Kit for people who want the perfect Maine summer meal. The kit also travels with another traditional food from New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt. , the whoopie pie A whoopie pie, sometimes alternatively called a gob or a black-and-white, is a baked good traditional to the Pennsylvania Dutch culture as well as New England, made of two small, chocolate, disk-shaped cakes with a sweet, creamy frosting sandwiched between them. .

So what's inside a Downeast Lobster Roll Kit?

"The kit starts with a pound of fresh Maine lobster- the equivalent of three average-sized lobsters," explains Cal Hancock. "We only use claw and knuckle meat, the tenderest part of the lobster. We add mayonnaise and our own subtle spices and we include 6 traditional New England split top rolls. They're not fancy, but they're firm and hold plenty of lobster meat. We also include instructions for creating this classic Maine meal, and, of course, a whoopie pie dessert for each lobster roll," she said.

The whoopie pie is so popular in New England that Yankee Magazine Yankee is a magazine published by Yankee Publishing Inc. of Dublin, New Hampshire.

First published in September 1935, Yankee caters to people who live in New England or who have an interest in the region.
once humorously fashioned a "New England Food Pyramid food pyramid or Food Guide Pyramid, diagram used in nutrition education that fits food groups into a triangle and notes that, for a healthful diet, those at the base should be eaten more frequently than those at the top. " including whoopie pies in their "major food groups" category. It's a chocolate cookie cake with creamy vanilla filling in the middle.

It's been suggested that they originated with a cook who had some leftover cake batter and dripped it into generous cookie-sized rounds. The success of this experiment supposedly elicited the exclamation, Whoopie! Pies!

The Downeast Lobster Roll Kit sells for $62.50, plus shipping.
