Isotypes in the Physical and Biomedical Sciences, vol. 1, Labelled Compounds.

This book is a research-level text, containing contributed chapters on radiolabelled insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides; isotopically labelled histamine H2-receptor antagonists; the preparation of tritium-labelled steroids, synthesis and applications of tritiated affinity probes, tritium-labelled hormones, pheromones, odorants and affinity labels; labelled eicosanoids; isotopically labelled gibberellins; preparation of radio-halogenated biomolecules via organotin intermediates; use of enzymes in the synthesis of stereospecifically labelled compounds; and protein labelling reagents.

As can be seen from this list the chapters vary in scope from the highly specific to the more general, the former predominating, with the inclusion of experimental procedures in two chapters (those on hormones etc. and eicosanoids). The high cost of this volume will likely inhibit personal purchase unless one's research interest align closely with one of the above topics, in which case this book will prove useful in providing a reasonably current and comprehensive literature review (most chapters contain references up to 1989 or 1990). The real value as a general text covering the preparation and application of labelled compounds lies in survey chapters such as that on the use of enzymes in the synthesis of stereospecifically labelled compounds (86 pages). For the organic chemist, this chapter alone justifies recommending the book for library purchase.
