Isonics Delivers Silicon-28 Wafers to Second Microprocessor Manufacturer.

Business Editors

GOLDEN, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 2000

Isonics Corporation (Nasdaq: ISON/ISONW, FRANKFURT: IO9) announced that it has received an order for and delivered silicon-28 epitaxial wafers to one of the world's leading microprocessor manufacturers. These wafers will be used to quantify the process and product improvements obtainable with silicon-28 compared to standard silicon epitaxial wafers.

Dr. Stephen Burden, Isonics' Vice President of Semiconductor Materials Semiconductor materials are insulators at absolute zero temperature that conduct electricity in a limited way at room temperature (see also Semiconductor). The defining property of a semiconductor material is that it can be doped with impurities that alter its electronic properties , remarked, "We are very pleased that another of the world's leading microprocessor manufacturers has decided to evaluate our isotopically purified silicon wafers for their products. The microprocessor industry is proceeding with the implementation of copper interconnects, low-k dielectrics, and silicon-on-insulator wafers in an effort satisfy the demand forever faster products. We believe silicon-28 will be the next breakthrough technology for the semiconductor industry."

Laboratory tests have shown isotopically pure silicon-28 to have 60% higher thermal conductivity thermal conductivity

A measure of the ability of a material to transfer heat. Given two surfaces on either side of the material with a temperature difference between them, the thermal conductivity is the heat energy transferred per unit time and per unit
than natural silicon. Isonics believes that the improved thermal conductivity of silicon-28 will facilitate the manufacture of higher density integrated circuits Integrated circuits

Miniature electronic circuits produced within and upon a single semiconductor crystal, usually silicon. Integrated circuits range in complexity from simple logic circuits and amplifiers, about 1/20 in. (1.
resulting in increased performance and improved chip yields. Silicon-28, in addition to improved thermal conductivity, can be used without any changes in existing semiconductor manufacturing processes. Isonics is delivering epitaxial wafers now and will be providing bulk silicon-28 wafers next year for evaluation.

Isonics is a world leader in isotopically engineered materials and produces isotopically pure silicon-28 chemicals and wafers for the semiconductor industry. Isonics also markets and sells stable isotopes stable isotope
