Is the eyecup important?Dear Editor, I have inspected many units which use the AN/PVS/-14 monocular monocular /mon·oc·u·lar/ (mon-ok´u-ler) 1. pertaining to or having only one eye. 2. having only one eyepiece, as in a microscope. mo·noc·u·lar adj. 1. night vision device (MNVD MNVD Monocular Night Vision Device ). I have been surprised at how many of these MNVDs don't have an eyecup eyecup /eye·cup/ (-kup) 1. a small vessel for application of cleansing or medicated solution to the exposed area of the eyeball. 2. optic cup (2). eye·cup n. 1. . I have been told by users that they don't use the eyecup because it is uncomfortable of doesn't fit right. Isn't this a safety issue? Doesn't the absence of an eyecup give the face a green glow that makes the head an inviting target? SFC SFC abbr. sergeant first class (Ret) David A. Trained by D. : You may be retired, Sergeant Jones, but your safety awareness is still on active duty. The eyecup is an absolute must have on the AN/PVS-14 and all other night vision devices (like the AN/PVS-7's). Without the eyecup, your face will light up with a green glow like a tree at Christmas. But the gift you may get is not one you will like! Page 2-38 of TM 11-5855-306-10, the operator's manual for the AN/PVS-14, says, "The eyecup must seal around your eye and prevent the green glow from escaping." If the eyecup is uncomfortable or doesn't fit right, the reasons are noted in the operator's manual and are correctable. Correct them! Don't abandon the use of the eyecup.) MAN, YOU'RE GLOWING!
