Is it OK to eat snacks between meals? Some people say it is, and some say it's not. Who is right?

Dear Pauline:

Generally speaking, it's better to eat something every few hours than to just have three big meals a day. By more evenly spreading out the food you eat, your body receives a more steady supply of fuel to keep its cells working. The problem is that many people eat unhealthy foods between meals. Foods that are high in fat or sugar--like most chips, candy, and snack cakes--are not good choices. If you get hungry between meals, try fruited yogurt, sugar-free cereal and milk, whole-wheat toast, raw vegetables, or fresh fruit.
