Through her research she discovered the relationship of improper electricity to stress, insomnia insomnia, abnormal wakefulness or inability to sleep. The condition may result from illness or physical discomfort, or it may be caused by stimulants such as coffee or drugs. However, frequently some psychological factor, such as worry or tension, is the cause. , ill heath, and weight gain. As a result of her study she has written the book "Is Your House Making You Overweight, Sick or Tired?" In her book Shontz set out to alert the reader that an improper external diet has a big effect on the human body.

He twenty year study and the observations she made in her research brought her to the conclusion that the major cause of ill health is from external causes. The book is dedicated to getting the reader to think about how these externals affect and impact your health and well being.

Shontz includes a disclaimer (networking) disclaimer - Statement ritually appended to many Usenet postings (sometimes automatically, by the posting software) reiterating the fact (which should be obvious, but is easily forgotten) that the article reflects its author's opinions and not necessarily those of the  to make the reader aware that she is not an electrician nor a technician or a health professional. Much of the book is devoted to experiences that demonstrate how the body works electrically and the related symptoms which may result with improper electricity. "Is Your House Making You Overweight, Sick or Tired?" is a valuable resource tool and provides proactive steps to be taken in light of the "External Diet" and insuring a proper electricity to insure health. This is truly remarkable approach to alternative medicine. Margaret Rouse Shontz may be ahead of her time in bringing this valuable information to the forefront.
