Irving Penn: Metropolitan museum of art; whitney museum of American art. (New York).Throughout his career, Irving Penn has offset the flawless chic of his fashion photographs with work that focuses on decidedly unfashionable things: skulls, cigarette butts, dead flowers. In 1949 and '50 he shot artists' models in the nude, clearly reveling in the sight of their soft, voluptuous bodies after years of lean clotheshorses. The "Earthly Bodies" turn up this winter at the Met, where they'll face competition from new Penn nudes at the Whitney.
