Irreversibility, the downfall.

SIR: Ayssar Arida is to be commended on his letter drawing our attention to the new paradigm New Paradigm

In the investing world, a totally new way of doing things that has a huge effect on business.

Notes:
The word "paradigm" is defined as a pattern or model, and it has been used in science to refer to a theoretical framework.
. It is, of course, not confined to architecture and the paradigm shift A dramatic change in methodology or practice. It often refers to a major change in thinking and planning, which ultimately changes the way projects are implemented. For example, accessing applications and data from the Web instead of from local servers is a paradigm shift. See paradigm.  already goes by several names, the most helpful being that of the transition from Mode 1 to Mode 2 as described by Gibbons Famous people named Gibbons include:
  • Beth Gibbons (born 1965), British singer
  • Billy Gibbons, guitarist for ZZ Top
  • Cedric Gibbons (1893–1960), American art director
  • Christopher Gibbons (1615 - 1676), English composer, son of Orlando
et al in their book The New Production of Knowledge. Mode 1 is the old, hard-edged Cartesian paradigm. Mode 2 is the new paradigm dominated by contextual relationships, by its softness and by its scorn for theory. It is largely skills-based, and therefore another statement of the paradigm shift is that of the invagination invagination /in·vag·i·na·tion/ (in-vaj?i-na´shun)
1. the infolding of one part within another part of a structure, as of the blastula during gastrulation.

2. intussusception.
of the relationship between skills and knowledge. Everyone reading this letter will have acquired their skills as incidentals to their knowledge base. Our successors (starting now) will acquire their knowledge as incidental to their skills. A 180 degree turn no less. This indeed is a remarkable time to be alive.

Ayssar Arida may nevertheless be optimistic in his time scales. It has taken more than three hundred years to establish the Cartesian paradigm (Mode 1) and against minimal opposition. It may take longer to replace it with its successor (Mode 2), the greatest obstacle being the present practitioners and, not least, the professors of architecture whose current status is only justified by their adherence to the old paradigm.

Regrettably, we are never in a position to wipe clean the slate of established wisdom. Irreversibility may be the downfall of all civilizations at all levels simply because the cost of changing course can easily exceed the cost of continuing the status quo [Latin, The existing state of things at any given date.] Status quo ante bellum means the state of things before the war. The status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy. . The new Scottish Parliament building The Scottish Parliament Building (Scottish Gaelic: Pàrlamaid na h-Alba)[1] is the home of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Edinburgh.  springs to mind.

I hope that nevertheless the architectural profession will at least embrace the arguments even if, in the end, they and we cannot yet make the leap into the future described by Ayssar Arida.

Yours etc
