 Alix Olson Alix Olson is an American poet who works exclusively in spoken word. Shot by Olson's tour manager and financed by the indispensable Women Make Movies, Left Lane follows the young alt-troubadour and her posse of dyke-proud stage mates as they ramble cross-country from gig to gig (200-plus days per year) in a big maroon van.

The Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Olson is the daughter and granddaughter of lefties, and her political outrage is potent. But what sets her apart is not her anger but her charm. Her buoyant delivery brings home her witty rhymes--"Attention, shoppers!!! / Attention, 9-to-5 folk, cell-phone masses, / the up-and-coming classes. / Attention, sports-utility plastic-surgery suburbanites; / Viagra-popping, Gucci-shopping urbanites.... Attention, WalMart congregation, shop-till-you-drop generation... America's on sale!"

When she led her team to victory at the 1998 National Poetry Slam The National Poetry Slam (NPS) is a performance poetry competition where teams from across the United States, Canada, and France participate in a large-scale poetry slam. Now that she's been around a bit, now that she's appeared on HBO's Def Comedy Jam Def Comedy Jam is a HBO television series produced by hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons. The series had its original run from July 1, 1992 to January 1, 1997. The show has returned on HBO's fall lineup in 2006.  and the cover of Ms., Olson is running at full velocity. Her chic blond-dyed locks frame the face of a star.
