(Washington Alert). On April 30 and May 1, several AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System. These tours were arranged as part of ongoing AFS efforts to work with EPA as the agency develops the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants The National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPS) are emissions standards set by the United States EPA for an air pollutant not covered by NAAQS that may cause an increase in fatalities or in serious, irreversible, or incapacitating illness. In December, EPA issued the proposed MACT standards establishing new emission limits for metal and organic hazardous air pollutants along with operating limits for capture systems and control devices and work practice requirements. APS submitted public comments (available at www.afsinc.org) to EPA voicing concerns over many of the provisions in the proposed rule and suggested that the agency staff go on plant tours to better understand foundry operations. As a result of these efforts, plant tours were arranged in Wisconsin at ThyssenKrupp Waupaca, Neenah Foundry Co., Kohler Co., Falk Corp. and Milwaukee Gray Iron. (As of press time, foundry tours of several Alabama facilities also are being arranged.) During the tours, EPA staff was able to see first-hand how the proposed standards would be applied. |
