Irish seek repeat of boys state title.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Prep Golf Sheldon's boys golf team sets out to defend its OSAA Class 4A boys golf title this morning at one of five state championship tournaments held around the state.

The Irish, who shot 14-under-par 274 during the second round of districts last week, are one of the favorites this morning at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn.

Sheldon shot 589 over two days last year at state to finish four shots ahead of runner-up Tualatin. Phillip Bagdade, the district champion with an 8-under-par 136, was on last year's championship team along with teammates Jack Dukeminier and Trevor Moffitt.

Marshfield returns to state for the second year in a row after finishing second at districts.

The Marshfield girls are also heading to state for the second year in a row at the 4A girls tournament at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City. The Pirates won the district title with a two-day total of 707 to finish 14 strokes ahead of Thurston, which finished second to advance to state.

Siuslaw's Jesse Schutte seeks his third straight state championship at the 3A boys tournament at The Resort Course at Eagle Crest in Redmond.

Schutte, who shot an 8-under par 136 to earn his fourth straight district championship last week, could become the second boy to win three state titles. Taft's Bob Rannow accomplished the feat from 1985-87.

Siuslaw is the defending state champion although Marist and Phoenix rank as the favorites this season. The Spartans won the district title by 20 shots ahead of the Vikings. Sutherlin, Newport, and Brookings also qualified for state.

Marist captured the girls district title and advanced to the 3A/2A/1A state tournament at The Ridge Course at Eagle Crest. La Pine, Sutherlin, North Bend, Newport, and Toledo also qualified for state.

McKenzie will play in the 2A/1A boys tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
