Byline: PAUL CLARKSON

IRELAND was yesterday declared the official host of the 10th Transplant Games in 2004.

The event - the European Heart and Lung Transplant Games - is open to athletes who have had organ transplant operations.

The Irish team won nine medals - including four golds - in this year's games in Klagenfurt, Austria, that finished on Monday.

Terry Mangan of the Irish Heart and Lung Transplant Association said: "Hosting the games in 2004 will highlight the importance of organ donation, leading to increased life saving transplants.

"It is an opportunity to raise donor awareness to new levels in Ireland."

Among the Irish gold medallists were Erneso Antonio, 100 metres breast stroke, and Martin Burke, 1500 metres run.
