Irish as fat as Yanks.

IRELAND is turning into a nation of fatties with rates of overweight people looking set to rival US levels.

Eating too much bread, larger portions, fast food, as well as Indian and Chinese takeaway meals were said to be contributing factors.

The Academy of Medical Laboratory Science conference in Killarney, Co Kerry, heard over-eating in the sense of taking in more energy than was needed was the biggest cause of being overweight.

Prof Barbara Livingstone of the University of Ulster at Coleraine said: "People have to become highly restrained eaters."
