(approximately $2.4 billion U.S.) are well advanced on a program to deliver a more integrated approach to tax administration. The multi-faceted, long-term program addresses corporate strategy, business processes, people, and technology.

The final phase of the program - Integrated Taxation Processing - replaces a number of mainframe-based systems and will provide a common system for handling tax returns and payments, including tax assessment, accounting and main collection activities for all major taxes. The Revenue Commissioners chose OpenIngres and CA-OpenROAD as the underlying technology for the delivery of this system. The selection followed an open invitation to tender in European Journal European Journal is a weekly Deutsche Welle (DW) news program produced in English. It is broadcast from Brussels, Belgium and primarily covers political and economic developments across the European Union and the rest of Europe, as well as issues of particular concern to , and an extensive evaluation of leading database solutions.

"The technology provided by CA is crucial to meeting the dynamic business requirements of tax administration in a booming economy, and represents very good value for the money," said Sean Connolly, director of IT for the Revenue Commissioners.

"We have developed a strong relationship with the Revenue Commissioners, working closely with them to implement another aspect of their extensive integration program," said Dustin McNabb, CA vice president of marketing. "This system, known as Active Intervention Management, facilitates a proactive approach to non-compliance and more rapid pursuit of large tax liability."

Traditionally, taxation authorities in Ireland have dealt with their customers on a separate tax-by-tax basis. In recent years, certain taxation authorities have adopted an integrated approach to tax administration. This involves a transformation from separately dealing with taxpayers for individual taxes, to a cross-tax customer-oriented focus. The integrated approach has proved to be the fastest and most effective way to deliver better customer service, new functions, improved compliance, and improved Exchequer yield.

"This agreement will provide the backbone for the Integrated Taxation Processing phase," said McNabb. "We are delighted at having the opportunity to continue our close relationship with the Revenue Commissioners to implement business-driven technology solutions."

The Integrated Taxation Processing project will be implemented throughout all of the Revenue Commissioners' 130 offices in the Republic of Ireland, where a total of 6,000 staff will have access to the new system.
