Van Gogh's Irises (1889) sold for a record price in 1987. A former assistant curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum situates the painting's place in the Dutch artist's career, battle with mental illness, and floral painting genre, and traces its provenance to its present home at the Getty Museum. The 6x7.5" volume features Western and Japanese art that influenced him, and photographs of the probable iris species he painted from gardens during his commitment at the asylum in Saint-Remy.
