Irdeto Access enables the delivery of secure premium content to

mobiles, PDAs, and in-vehicle devices

Irdeto Access, a subsidiary of multinational media group Naspers (NASDAQ: NPSN) (JSE: NPN), a world leader in content protection and management solutions, today announced the provision of the first ever conditional access system (CAS) for mobile applications for SK Telecom's Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) service. This service enables SK Telecom's subscribers to enjoy multichannel, multimedia broadcasting any place, anytime via personalized mobile or vehicle devices. Irdeto Access' new CAS for mobile applications protects and secures this content, and allows consumers a choice of devices on which to receive it.

The new mobile CAS enables subscribers of SK Telecom, the leading Korean telecommunications operator, to access its encrypted content and to receive it on mobile phones, PDAs, and in-vehicle devices. Unique to the solution, Irdeto Access has developed Dual Key Hierarchy Protection, a technique that not only reduces CA-related bandwidth consumption significantly but also improves security integrity. With extensive subscriptions to the Satellite DMB service anticipated, this technique is the only viable and secure method for an operator to manage more than 10 million subscribers. Additionally, Irdeto Access' Rapid Refresh(C) technique provides additional layers of countermeasures in the event of piracy, and ensures conditional access messages are cycled at higher rates than in previous-generation systems, reducing overall costs while at the same time increasing security.

The new mobile CAS is based on Irdeto Access' award-winning Irdeto PIsys system, a DVB conditional access system for large-scale satellite DTH, cable, IPTV, and terrestrial broadcasting, and now also for mobile applications. Irdeto PIsys is designed for large-scale installations and enables operators to secure content and manage entitlements for millions of subscribers. The system is compatible with a wide range of set-top boxes, client devices, compression equipment, and subscriber management systems.

The new mobile CAS can support Korean SMS, EPG, and multiple business models including pay-per-view and pre-paid vouchers. Irdeto Access has also agreed to establish a Korean Centre of Excellence together with SK Telecom for research and development and Satellite DMB device integration. Irdeto Access already opened an office in Korea in June this year.
