Iraq is an Arab nation located on the Persian Gulf Persian Gulf, arm of the Arabian Sea, 90,000 sq mi (233,100 sq km), between the Arabian peninsula and Iran, extending c.600 mi (970 km) from the Shatt al Arab delta to the Strait of Hormuz, which links it with the Gulf of Oman.  in southwestern Asia. The world's first known civilization developed there along the Tigris and Euphrates Tigris and Euphrates is a German strategy board game designed by Reiner Knizia and first published in 1997 by Hans im Glück in German (as Euphrat und Tigris).  rivers. Iraq became part of the Arab Empire in the 600s A.D. and absorbed Arab culture (See Mapman, p. 19).

AREA: 169,236 square miles, slightly larger than California. The land is mostly desert.

POPULATION: 23,600,000; 68% urban; 32% rural. Arabs make up 75% of the population; Kurds, 20%; others, 5%.

GOVERNMENT: One-party presidential dictatorship; Saddam Hussein has been President since 1979.

ECONOMY: Oil dominates the economy. Iraq's invasion of Kuwait The Invasion of Kuwait, also known as the Iraq-Kuwait War, was a major conflict between the Republic of Iraq and the State of Kuwait which resulted in the 7 month long Iraqi occupation of Kuwait[4]  in 1990--followed by U.S. military action and international economic penalties--drastically hurt Iraq's economy. Industries: Textiles, chemicals, oil refining. Minerals: Oil, gas.
