Iran-Iraq peace talks continue.


Ways to move forward within the framework of Security Council resolution 598 (1987) in order to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace between Iran and Iraq have been put forward by Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar Pé·rez de Cuél·lar   , Javier Born 1920.

On 27 October, the Security Council had held consultations to review progress in the implementation of resolution 598. In a statement issued after the consultations, Council President L. Yves Fortier Yves Fortier is the name of:

 of Canada said Council members remained concerned over a lack of tangible progress in achieving full implementation of the resolution and expressed the full support of the Council to the mission of the Personal Representative of the Secretary-General.

Mr. Eliasson visited the two countries between 31 October and 17 November, shuttling between the two capitals in the UN plane. He conferred with Iran President Hashemi Rafsanjani and Iraq President Saddam Hussein, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati Dr. Ali Akbar Velayati (علی‌اکبر ولایتی; born June 25, 1945 in Shemiran) is an Iranian politician and a pediatrician, currently an Advisor in International Affairs to the Supreme Leader. , his Iraqi counterpart, Tariq Aziz, and other senior officials.

At the conclusion of his mission, it was reported that Mr. Eliasson's consultations had focused on how to end the current state of no-war no-peace and implement resolution 598. "Both sides expressed in clear terms their present position, which he would convey to the SecretaryGeneral upon his return to Headquarters", according to a statement issued by the UN. On 28 November, the Secretary-General reported to the Security Council on the Eliasson mission.

Resolution 598, adopted unanimously on 20 July 1987, calls inter-alia for a cease-fire, an end to all military actions in the region, withdrawal of forces to internationally recognized boundaries, dispatch of a team of UN observers to supervise those actions, and the release and repatriation Repatriation

Mr. Eliasson said the 15-month old cease-fire was "holding well", due to the "understanding and cooperation of the parties and the efforts of the United Nations IranIraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG UNIIMOG United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group ) personnel on both sides".
