Iran urges Russia to deliver on defense contract despite pressure from Israel.

TEHRAN: Iran urged Russia on Wednesday to deliver on an air-defense contract signed with Tehran and ignore Israeli pressures for delaying the deal that has also raised US concerns.AaIranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said Moscow is under an obligation to carry out the contract to provide the S-300 missiles to Tehran.Aa

Russia signed a contract in 2007 to sell S-300 surface-to-air missiles to Iran but hasn't yet made any deliveries or given an explanation for the delay.Aa

The S-300 missiles are capable of shooting down aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missile warheads at ranges of over 145 kilometers and at altitudes of about 90,000 feet.Aa

Vahidi said Russia should ignore Israeli pressures and go ahead with the delivery.Aa

"Russia has to fulfill [its obligations under] the contract and not be influenced by Zionist pressures," ILNA quoted him as saying.Aa

Tehran has been disappointed by what it perceives as Moscow stalling under Western pressure.Aa
