Iran Raps Israel's Refusal to Join NPT as Main Deterrent to Global Denuclearization.

Summary: TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi lashed out at Israel for refusing to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and called the regime's stubbornness as the main obstacle to the global exercise of the NPT.

"The Zionist regime' obstinate refusal to join the NPT is still the main obstacle to the implementation of the treaty in the world," Salehi said, addressing a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement members in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm al-Sheikh on Wednesday.

He reiterated that the Zionist regime's refusal to join the NPT is also the main reason why Iran's proposal for the creation of a nuclear weapons-free Middle-East has remained dormant.

Salehi called on all the world states to do everything within their possibilities to make the Zionist regime accept the NPT and, hence, prepare the ground for the materialization of Iran's offer for a Middle-East region free from atomic weapons.

Israel, the Middle East's sole nuclear power, possesses hundreds of nuclear warheads while it is not a signatory to the NPT or any other international convention.

The Zionist regime has never allowed UN inspectors to visit its nuclear sites or arsenals.

Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaee had also earlier this year blasted Israel for refusing to join the NPT, and urged the international community to pressure the regime into joining the treaty.

"Iran considers Israel as the prime suspect in the field of possessing nuclear weapons and not abiding by the NPT. The international community should exert pressure on the Zionist regime to join the NPT," Khazaee said.
