Over the past two years, however, the number of consumers purchasing aspirin for prevention and maintenance of heart health has increased 30% relative to a more modest 11% increase in the Rx buying segment. Among those who are actively seeking treatment, 82% of the hypertension sufferers manage their condition with Rx drug therapy exclusively. Since 1998, the growth of exclusive OTC aspirin therapy to prevent and regulate hypertension has risen to 6% of the consumer base. The remaining 12% purchase both Rx and aspirin for their hypertension treatment.

While aspirin therapy has a less important role than Rx treatment regimens, the driving force behind its growth are baby boomers See generation X.  between the ages of 35 - 54. This group accounts for 40% of adults purchasing aspirin therapy exclusively for maintenance of heart health and hypertension prevention.

"As the population ages, there are increased health concerns and demands for alternative therapies," says Fariba Zamaniyan, manager of PharmTrends client services. "Baby boomers are adopting treatment alternatives and prevention techniques to maintain good health and extend their lives as they near retirement. This important segment of the population is educated, energetic and concerned about their health. Therefore, it's not surprising that they are a driving force behind aspirin therapy for heart health and hypertension management."

Over three-quarters of the adults who purchase aspirin for hypertension prevention and/or treatment do so because of their doctor's recommendation. This trend is consistent among baby boomers. Since more and more Americans are being diagnosed with hypertension, the need to treat the condition and take measures to maintain good health increases as well. Amazingly, not everyone who is diagnosed treats this potentially life-threatening condition at all. In fact, 20% of individuals recently diagnosed with hypertension (past 12 months) report that they do not treat their condition with any type of drug therapy.
